Last Lecture: My Thoughts
The course has looked at a number of sources ranging from the right to the left of evangelicalism in terms of the authors theological position. The intent of the course was never to change the students position just allow the student to speak to their position with some sense of the strengths and weaknesses of their position.
Just like we said when we started:
Last Lecture: Science and Religion
The essay that we looked was written by Sagan and published by his wife after his death in the book "Billions and Billions". It marked an interesting stage in Sagan's career where he realized that despite a life spent building a trusted public persona he had not been able to touch the core identity and values of the people he was addressing. Thus he began to try to find common ground with the "religious tribe" (as he called them). It must have been frustrating for him but it is revealing when thinking about the interaction of Science and Religion.
That said, those that liked Sagan, liked him alot. Even now, people are mining his words and productions to try to hear him speak once again. The latest in this series is the mash-up of Carl's words from Pale Blue Dot (another book where he discussed his successful attempt to get NASA to turn Voyager around and take one last photo of Earth while it was still visible).
It is worth listening to.

This Will Rock Your Worldview
So yesterday, a space telescope was launched that will spend a long, long time looking at one small patch of sky that is rich in stars. By monitoring the brightness of these stars and determining if the variations are periodic, the astronomers can determine the characteristic of the planets that circle the stars. This is not new but the sensitivity of the methods used have gotten finer and finer. We are now at the point where it might be possible to see Earth like planets pass between us and their primary stars.
So why will this rock our worldview? Well, I guess it depends on your thinking. This study should give us a reasonable number for one of the probabilities in the Drake Equation (the number of habitable planets capable of supporting life as we know it). This will edge us further into less speculative thinking about life in the Universe other than us. For some of us theists this thinking may be more of a problem than evolution. What would it mean for us theologically if there were life in other star systems and the meaning of the Fall and Salvation? We might have to start thinking about this.
It is interesting that they call the space telescope Kepler after the famous astronomer Kepler who said that in Science "we are thinking God's thoughts after Him". Kepler was a contemporary of Galileo and there are a number of myths surrounding the relationships between Brahe-Kepler-Galileo. But the reality was that Kepler nailed down the Copernican Universe with Brahe's exceptional data (based on ground based, naked eye observations) and math, with no help from Galileo (or his telescope). I dub this name ironic but also prophetic for this space telescope could in the same way nail down a controversy with simple Baconian observation.

Brooke Week 3: Mechanical Enlightenment
“The theme of Chapter IV is the mechanization of the natural world – that seventeenth century development which has often been seen as a decisive advance on organic models of the cosmos.”(p. 13)
“One of the many ironies in our story is that a model for the universe, which in the seventeenth century was used to affirm God’s sovereignty, was used by the deists of the eighteenth century in their attacks on established religion” (p. 13)

Brooke Week 4 : Natural Theology and The Science of History
So we complete our time in Brooke who takes us from Pre-history to Modernity. We are now able to agree with Solomon that "there is no new thing under the Sun" but as applied to Science and Faith. We started this section by discussing how a theistic person would view a lightening rod as a challenge to God's sovereignty and complete it with the largely duelist view of a modern, complementary worldview where the developments of Science do not impact issues of faith.
In this week, we start with how the modern worldview provides a completely different historical narrative from the Universe to the mundane. To show how this works we start with a couple of simple questions:
1) If a strict Baconian looks at the following photo as the only evidence for humanity what would that scientist be able to say?
1) If a Cartesian looks at the following photo as the only evidence for humanity what would that scientist be able to say?
We discovered of course that Baconians have a very limited ability to see the obvious. If we then extend this principle to the Universe and the message written for us in the stars then what do we see? Well, this is the Universe as we see it.
If we allow a Cartesian analysis of what we see then we can categorize the stars according to size and history.
Leading us to conclude that if our Sun behaves in any way like the stars in the Universe that are the same size then this is not only the history of our Sun but its future as well. What is amazing in this is that if this model is correct then to form a golf atom in a wedding band the atom would have to have been fused in the heart of one star. That star would have to explode and turn to dust then return to the heart of a second star which then uses it as fuel to form the gold atom and then that star explodes to dust that eventually got collected up into the ball of space debris that formed our Earth. At least two stars. Makes you wonder.
Another thing that makes you wonder is that our view of the Universe is based on what we can see. The fact is that stars closer to us block the view of stars that are farther away. So one year the Hubble Space Telescope was trained on a tiny spot of night sky that was apparently dark. What they discovered was that the tiny black spot was a window past the local stars to the farther stars and this famous photo was collected. It is important to note that the image did not see stars but galaxies of millions, billions, trillions of stars ... all in a window the size of a grain of sand in the night sky.

Chapter 6: The Fortunes and Functions of Natural Theology
“The object of the chapter is to uncover some of the reasons why this integration of science and religion proved so viable, despite the existence of trenchant critiques. We shall also consider the extent to which a commitment to natural theology affected the scientific enterprise and the extent to which advances in science affected the plausibility of arguments from design. ” (p. 15)
“The idea that divine wisdom could be discerned in nature was attractive in different ways, both to Christian apologists and to deists. Christians found the argument useful in their dialogues with unbelief. It seemed to offer independent proof of a God who they believed had also revealed Himself in the person of Christ. On the other hand, Deists also had reasons for promoting the design argument. The more that could be known of God through rational inference the less perhaps it was necessary to refer to revelation at all” (p. 193)

Although there were countless attempts to harmonize these disturbing vistas with biblical texts, they were eventually abandoned – at least among academic theologians – as the methods of historical research were brought to bear on questions of biblical authorship” (p. 14)
“With the emergence of more sophisticated historical scholarship, particularly in Germany, it had already become clear to many Christian intellectuals that adherence to the literal inerrancy of Scripture was no way to present the credentials of Christianity to the modern world.” (p. 231)

Brooke Week 2: Revolution and Reformation
We looked at Chapters 2 and 3 of Brooke last week and focused on the near co-incident hinges of history called the Scientific Revolution and The Reformation. There were a few notable quotes:
"In Chapter II we address a specific historical problem: The interpretation of those shifts in the understanding of nature that, during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, added up to what traditionally been called the Scientific Revolution." (p. 12)
"While it is true that investigations into nature were often subordinate to religious concerns in the late medieval period, it would be mis-leading to imply that they were bound together in am indissoluble complex until they were prized apart in the seventeenth century" (p. 12)

Why would they have tulip motifs in their stained glass windows? Well the people at The Center for Reformed Theology and Apologetics offers us the following:"This system of theology was reaffirmed by the Synod of Dordt in 1619 as the doctrine of salvation contained in the Holy Scriptures. The system was at that time formulated into "five points" in answer to the unscriptural five points submitted by the Arminians to the Church of Holland in 1610. "

Limited Atonement
Irrisistible Grace
Perseverance of the Saints
So the tulips in your church's stained glass windows are there as a mnemonic to remind you that once upon a time your church was Calvinist (or it still is). 'Nough said.

Edge of Reason Debates: Contraception and God

So, we had our first "Edge of Reason" or EoR debate. The topic was ... Contraception and fertility treatments in all their forms interfere with God’s action and are therefore inappropriate for Christians.The debate did not go well. There was very little reference to source and other than vague counterarguments there certainly was not a debate in the sense of point-counterpoint.
We did get the debate converted into a discussion where the majour points were made but we will need to work a bit more on our debating skills. The other issue with the debates is that they are an opportunity for people that are hesitant to speak in class to contribute (as is this blog). As we continue into the course those students that do not contribute will get low subjective evaluation marks.
With respect to the debate topic the expected progression (with reference to sources) was:
Theists have a position on the sanctity of life that should inform the KIND of contraception (barrier, chemical, abortificant).
Theists have a belief in an immanent God that can participate in procreation.
Theists believe that God wants us to enjoy a sexual relationship with our life partners.
Theists (some at least) believe that (like lightning rods) science has revealed blessings from Creation to help us enjoy life ... that includes contraception.
Atheistic science pretty much has a different morality and ethic based on reductionism and a profound materialist view that this life is all there is.
Christians in good conscience disagree about contraception mostly on the issue of the sovereignty of God in procreation and the role of an immanent God in our lives.
Brooke Week 1: Nothing is Simple
I am going to open this blog for comments and questions that you may have had for the sources that we are considering. In this case I would like to focus on the readings from Brooke for both the Introduction and Chapter 1.
As noted in class the danger with historical review is that for the most part we have to accept that the author is an authority so that assertions are from knowledge not bias. We also have to assume that the author is faithfully reporting the facts of history. Given those assumptions we consider Brooke.
Below the image you will find what I feel are some of the key quotes from the passage. I would also include the chapter summaries from the introduction. So, read the selected quotes and if you have questions you need to ask them now before we move on.
"An ounce of scientific knowledge could be more effective in controlling the forces of nature than any amount of supplication."
"The popular antithesis between science, conceived as a body of unassailable facts, and religion, conceived as a set of unverifiable beliefs, is assuredly simplistic."

Now, if I were to ask questions on the final exam on this passage they would take two forms:
1) I would give you a quote from the source and ask you what it meant
2) I would ask you to compare what Brooke says to other sources in the course.
So pretty much what you have above are quotes that you should be able to place in context and you should be thinking as you read where other sources have discussed the same topics.

Faith and Science Issues: Medicine
You might remember that I said in the first lecture that some would argue that the measure of religious faith and conviction is not to be willing to die for your faith but to be willing to kill. I guess I have to set that measure aside for this kind of faith that would allow your child to die in misery. This just sets the faith / conviction bar too high for me.

Making Connections: Rosalind Franklin
The lecture was intended to provide us with a platform to discuss the nature of truth and goodness in Science (and their opposites: falsehood and evil). The replacement of the emotive and relational nature of goodness and truth in the Judeo-Christian culture that we have been raised in with the dispassionate and objective ideals of Science wrecks once again on the failure of human nature to ever completely follow the whispers of our "greater angels". It was ever thus.
So we have to deal with reality in all its messy details. In "The Race for the Double Helix" the science myth is created where Watson and Crick are self revealed as lying, thieving, glory hounds. Since this is self revealed it must be true for who would promote a historical account of themselves that makes them seem foolish. Odd ... that argument seems strangely like the argument that the disciples must have been telling the truth when they recorded the New Testament accounts that make them all look like stupid, lying, thieving glory hounds.In any event it was important for us to see how two accounts of the same events, even with many of the principle players still alive and involved in the accounts, can be different in both tone and content.


It is interesting however that just recently the New York Times published an article that referenced Rosalind Franklin. It would appear that in some of the sciences there continues to be an unexplained exit of female scientists. One of the organizations that promotes the role of women in Science turns out to be the Rosalind Franklin Society.

If we understand her at all after all these years since her death I doubt that she would want us to shed a tear for her or waste our time on pity but the seize the day that we have been given.
PS there is a line in the NYT article that describes the relative difficulty level of physics, chemistry and biology and the writer in describing chemistry says "the fact that women earn half of the undergraduate degrees in chemistry, which is not quite plush toy material." LOL

Leture Notes: Water "The Bible and Science"
Our first source in this course comes to us from the more conservative, evangelical Christian end of the philosophical spectrum. We should be fair to the source and note that any source that has the words "... Made Easy" in the title is not intending to take us into the deep water. No, the intention in this pamphlet is to guide the reader in a series of reflections on the Creation and what it says about the Creator. Along the way there will be the odd mention of the possibility of people who might have different positions on some of these issues ... but they are all damned and going to Hell so we really do not need to worry about them.The thinking university student needs to look at this source in the same way that you would a wolf in sheep's clothing. It is clear that the author is speaking from a biased position and is dismissive of other positions held even by those of the Christian faith. Being right does not mean you no longer should be fair or just (and I am not even going to allow that it is a or the right position ... I'm just sayin'). It most certainly is not an attitude that conforms to any liberal arts tradition or ideals.
What should you take away from this source? This source is the easiest to identify the authors position and bias. It will get steadily more difficult to do so as we progress through the sources in this course. But then again most Fundamentalist writers have the grace and subtlety of a boot to the head. It's true! I know I have a reputation for hyperbole and digression but really most Fundamentalist / Creationist authors write as if they did most of their work in the bathroom (by the way this is a tradition that goes way back the great Martin Luther was the 14th century version of Hank Hill's boss Mr. Buck Strickland).
In addition, I do like how Water takes us back over and over to the Creation as a guide to the attributes of the Creator. We are told in Scripture that indeed this is a correct and good thing to do. The source is not intended to be deep and is intended to provide comfort for a given faith position. That does not make anything in the source wrong but it does give us a reference point for comparison with other sources.
We needed to start somewhere. So from now on you can say ... "Water indicated that ..." and be comfortable that the position stated comes from a conservative - fundamentalist point of view. Get your boots on 'cause the mud only gets deeper from here on out.
Lecture Notes: The Socratic Method

So, we start the course again. We are at the beginning so now if the time to start good habits and eliminate bad ones. The readings in this course have a way of building up and can overwhelm you if you let them slide more than a week or two.
The lectures will follow the Socratic Method in terms of style following a form laid down by yet another dead Greek ... Socrates. Just once it would be nice to reference a living Greek. In any event this is the description of his method.
"To illustrate the use of the Socratic method; a series of questions are posed to help a person or group to determine their underlying beliefs and the extent of their knowledge. The Socratic method is a negative method of hypothesis elimination, in that better hypotheses are found by steadily identifying and eliminating those which lead to contradictions. It was designed to force one to examine one's own beliefs and the validity of such beliefs. In fact, Socrates once said, "I know you won't believe me, but the highest form of Human Excellence is to question oneself and others.""
Now, to be fair, in my opinion the Socratic Method is a bit aggressive and students can be a bit intimidated. You should come to class expecting to be asked questions. The first part of the lecture will be the easy stuff ... what did the source actually say and this. We will then likely have a class exercise : assignment or debate and finish with an analysis of the source for the day.
But Prof. H. I hear you say ... I am just a timid woodland creature and do not have an opinion until you tell me what it is. Well, to paraphrase the immortal Soup Nazi ...
So, in the face of such a harsh system what is a poor student to do?
1) Read the source
2) Know the source
3) Form an opinion
4) Ask questions and make comments (this last point is an important one, in past years I have had students that had the knowledge base of a well trained Labrador Retriever but they still had exceptional subjective evaluations because they would ask questions. I have also had students that easily threw away 10% of their final mark (three whole grade fractions) because they refused to particpate). You get to decide. Decide well.

We Have to Draw the Line Somewhere Don't We?
There is a blog by Chet Raymo that I keep an eye on and he posted a thoughtful response that he titled Capax Dei on recent changes of thinking in the Catholic Church. LINK TO POST. He makes reference to the current Pope's position on Science and Faith which is interesting in it's own right.
While Raymo's blog makes for interesting reading, and is definitely a position that we will need to deal with in our course, it does beg the question of where we draw the line between conservative evangelical theism and liberal theism. I think that his revised Creed at the end makes the line clear for us. I will reproduce it here:
"We believe in God, the source and animator of heaven and earth, and all that is seen and unseen.
We honor the personhood of Jesus Christ, light of the world, who gave his name and inspiration to the Christian fellowship, and who taught us to love all women and men as we love ourselves. For us he made the ultimate sacrifice, that we might live more freely and graciously.

Galileo In the News
I like this statement that makes him sound like a early version of Carl Sagan ...
"Unlike other scientific tomes of its time, which were written in Latin and addressed a scholarly audience, the Dialogue spoke in Italian to an underserved public of intelligent, curious laymen who couldn't afford a university education.
